Munyarari lies in the Eastern side of the country of Zimbabwe, in the southern part of Mutare in Manicaland Province. The campus constitutes of three institutions that is a school (primary and secondary), a church and a clinic. On the 31st of October 2021, the community experienced harsh weather conditions characterised by heavy rains, strong winds and thunderstorms. Within a few minutes, there was substantial infrastructural damage to what was once the hub of knowledge for the local children. The Abdullah Dzinamarira Foundation supports some underprivileged children who are students at the school.
Education and health are basic human rights that need not be ignored and failure to provide a conducive learning environment for the learners at Munyarari school means we have robbed children of their future. Abdul Kalam states that ‘Education gives creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking provides knowledge and knowledge makes you great’. The heavy rains left behind a trail of unbearable damages and, if no help is rendered to the Munyarari community, a great future of the young learners and the lives of the community will be put to waste.
It is indeed a heart-breaking sight at Munyarari campus seeing learners of different levels and grades sharing a church as a classroom while others learn from outside under a tree. Learners with destroyed classrooms are packed in the different corners of the church, a building with a roof that is missing sheets. The grade seven teacher shouts algebra in one corner while the ECD teacher leads a rhyme in another. What a sad, bleak and despairing situation for the learners.
The storm sadly came against a backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic that had taken learners away from the classroom for close to a year exposing them to falling behind due to school closure. During an interview with the primary school head teacher, she said, “The impact of the disaster will continue to be felt and such an experience will have a huge influence on the different levels of preparedness and response, the disaster was a wakeup call for us in terms of disaster preparedness.’ The immense infrastructural damage that was caused by the heavy storm need not be addressed by renovating and replacing the buildings alone but also by improving more proactive disaster risk management and social protection systems. This will equip the Munyarari community to effectively deal with future disasters.
The ADF team also visited Munyarari Clinic, a building that was the hardest hit. The entire roof was blown away. This also ushered unprecedented impact not only to the Munyarari community but to other communities that benefit from the services of the clinic especially in the face of COVID-19. One villager was quoted saying, “The pandemic has made clinics and hospitals our second homes as we flock in and out to get medication, vaccines and test for COVID-19 but all these services have been put in the drain”.
Let us come together and join ADF in supporting such a noble cause. The hope of the Munyarari community lies in our hands. Together you and I can make Munyarari great again. Donate now and help share hope.
